More Than Words® Certification Workshop 


Q: Who can take the More Than Words Certification Workshop?

A: This workshop is for qualified speech-language pathologists/therapists.

Note: In Canada and the United States, a Master’s degree in speech-language pathology or its equivalent is required. If you are an SLP who registers for a workshop taking place outside of the country in which you work, The Hanen Centre may need to contact you for further information to confirm your eligibility to attend the workshop.


Q: Can speech-language pathology students take the More Than Words workshop?

A: No, SLP students are not permitted to attend this workshop.


Q: Are there any prerequisites for the More Than Words workshop?

A: There are no prerequisites for this workshop.


Q: What are the workshop objectives?

A: Upon completion of the More Than Words Certification Workshop, SLP/Ts will be able to:

  • Describe the current research on prevalence, biology and diagnosis of ASD
  • Describe current intervention approaches for children with ASD and how More Than Words integrates principles of best practice in the treatment of children with ASD.
  • Select appropriate communication goals for individual children with ASD based on assessment of the child’s social and communication skills
  • Apply principles of adult education to provide parents with the training, information and support they need to become their child’s primary communication facilitator
  • Teach parents to apply communication facilitation strategies that are specifically adapted to the individual needs of their child with ASD flexibly and across contexts
  • Assess videotaped parent-child interactions and provide personalized coaching and feedback in order to facilitate parents’ application of program strategies within everyday interactions with their child
  • Lead More Than Words – The Hanen Program® for Parents of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Q: What is the workshop format and agenda?

A: More Than Words is a 3-day workshop consisting of approximately 6 hours of training per day (excluding scheduled breaks). In a small group, SLPs participate in experiential, hands-on activities as the instructor guides them through the process of teaching adults in the context of a parent group in a More Than Words Program, as well as in the context of everyday clinical practice. In a supportive environment, SLPs have the opportunity to practice each component of the teaching process and to self-evaluate, as well as to receive constructive feedback from the instructor.

Q: What are the workshop fees and materials?

A: Fees vary from workshop to workshop, depending on location, venue and administrative costs. Visit the individual workshop registration pages for Early Bird and regular fees. Included in your workshop fee is the following full set of More Than Words resources:

  • More Than Words Making Hanen Happen Leaders Guide – This manualized guide includes information on Hanen’s teaching methodology, and provides a detailed guide to leading the program, session by session. It includes all the handouts and checklists required to lead the program.
  • More Than Words PowerPoint slides DVD with embedded video clips – This DVD contains the presentation slides for all sessions of the program, and includes real-life video examples of parents using More Than Words strategies
  • More Than Words Parent Guidebook (Sussman, 2012) – The Parent Guidebook is used during the program to reinforce what parents learn in the group sessions and provide them with helpful reminders and new ideas. It is also helpful for use in individual sessions with parents.
  • More Than Words companion DVD – This DVD contains real-life examples of parents using More Than Words strategies and may be used to support individual consultations or home programming

Q: Do I become certified after attending this workshop?

A: Yes. Participants receive accreditation of their “Certified” status upon signing a Cooperative Agreement (this agreement licenses SLPs to lead More Than Words® — The Hanen Program® for Parents of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder). Participants also receive a one-year renewable Hanen membership upon completion of the workshop. To maintain their certification and have full access to member benefits, SLPs must renew their Hanen membership annually for a nominal fee.

Note: Full attendance at all days of the workshop is required in order to receive your certification.


Q: Is there anything I need to do before I come to the workshop?

A: Yes. In order to attend the workshop, all registrants must complete a Pre-workshop Assignment. A link to the assignment will be sent to you after registration. This assignment covers important content that is needed in order to participate in the workshop and receive your certification. For this reason, its completion is mandatory.

Note: The Pre-Workshop Assignment must be completed at least five days before the start date of the workshop. If it is not completed, you will not be permitted to attend the workshop. Any refunds will be subject to the cancellation policy of the host organization – up to and including forfeiture of your registration fee.

Q: Once I’ve completed More Than Words, which other Hanen workshops will I be eligible to take?

A: More Than Words is a prerequisite workshop for the TalkAbility™ Advanced Hanen Workshop and the ABC and Beyond™ Advanced Hanen Workshop. You will be eligible to take either of these workshops as long as your Hanen membership is current. Please note that More Than Words is not a prerequisite workshop for the It Takes Two to Talk® or Learning Language and Loving It™ certification workshops.


Q: How many continuing education credits will I receive?

A: This workshop is offered for 2.20 ASHA CEUs (Introductory Level, Professional Area) Full attendance and participation during the three days is required. As a prerequisite, there is an Individual Learning Component to be completed before participation in the workshop. This workshop focuses specifically on the More Than Words® Program and accompanying resources and there will be limited or no information provided about similar products or services.

Q: What are the workshop instructor’s qualifications?

A: All Hanen workshops are led by a Hanen Instructor who has successfully completed in-depth training from The Hanen Centre. In addition to leading Hanen Workshops for The Hanen Centre, all Hanen Instructors are practising SLPs who lead Hanen Programs as part of the clinical services they offer in their respective places of employment.


Q: I may not have the opportunity to offer the More Than Words Program to groups of families. Will the workshop still be useful to me?

A: Yes. While the workshop focuses on the delivery of the program, More Than Words strategies can be easily integrated into one-to-one consultations and home programming.


Q: How can I find a More Than Words workshop?

A: Visit the workshop schedule. If there are no workshops currently scheduled in your area, sign up for email notification so you’ll be informed as soon as a workshop becomes available.


Q: Am I responsible for my own accommodations?

A: Yes, workshop participants must research and arrange their own travel and accommodations.


Q: I am not an SLP, but I am interested in Hanen strategies for myself or my organization. What can I do?

  • Arrange for a presentation – The Hanen Centre's professional staff speaks at a variety of venues throughout the year including professional conferences, symposiums, and conventions. For more information on bringing a presentation to your organization or community, please email presentations@hanen.org.
  • Attend a Hanen e-Seminar – The following online training sessions are based on content from the More Than Words Program and are open to all professionals who work with young children:
  • Use Hanen resources – The guidebooks used by parents and educators in Hanen Programs are available for purchase on their own. These guidebooks, along with their accompanying companion DVDs, offer highly practical, research-based strategies for promoting communication development in young children.
