Course Overview

Do you sometimes see children who are highly verbal with good cognitive skills, but who exhibit some features of ASD? These children may find it challenging to interact with peers, understand the perspectives of others, and “read between the lines” of what people say or do.

When language and cognitive skills appear strong, social communication challenges can sometimes be overlooked. But as professionals, we know these children may have difficulty transitioning to different academic and social environments, and they may have trouble succeeding in school and forming friendships.

Hanen’s newest e-Seminar considers how to help these children with a practical and forward-thinking lens – what are the specific skills we can nurture that will lay the foundation for them to succeed as they move from kindergarten to the early school years? And what are some strategies we can use and share with parents to build that foundation of important skills?

During this 4-hour interactive session, you will:
  • Deepen your understanding of a developmental profile that’s often overlooked
  • Watch real-life video examples and access discussion questions to support your learning
  • Learn about the emerging research on how girls and boys with social communication challenges differ and how that impacts upon our understanding of ASD
  • Gain insight into parents’ experiences supporting their children
  • Learn practical, naturalistic strategies to support social communication, behaviour and play in everyday interactions with adults and peers

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this e-Seminar, you will be able to:

  • Identify the similarities and differences between highly verbal children with features of ASD and other children with ASD
  • Understand the developmental profile of highly verbal children with features of ASD, and share your observations and concerns with families
  • Understand the links between conversation, theory of mind, and play and how these impact interaction
  • Apply specific responsive interaction strategies to support interaction for highly verbal children with features of ASD
