Course Overview

Verbal children on the autism spectrum often have difficulty developing a “theory of mind” or “tuning in” to the thoughts and feelings of others.

Teaching Tuning In breaks down the research on theory of mind development, explaining how it differs in children on the autism spectrum. Participants learn specific, research-based interaction strategies for helping these children tune in to others. These practical, naturalistic strategies can be implemented directly with children in therapy or be shared with parents to help them promote their children’s theory of mind within everyday interactions and conversations.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this 2 hour e-seminar, participants will be able to:

  • define “theory of mind/tuning in”
  • describe how joint attention and theory of mind are connected
  • Describe the five stages of tuning in: understanding; wanting; thinking; seeing leads to knowing; hidden feelings; and false beliefs
  • summarize differences in the development of “tuning in” in typically developing children and in children who have social communication difficulties
  • describe specific interactive strategies, drawn from Hanen Programs®, that parents and clinicians can use to facilitate “tuning in” with children on the autism spectrum
  • apply interactive strategies that promote “tuning in” to naturalistic activities with children on the autism spectrum at each stage of the development of “tuning in”
