Hanen 4 “I”s to Socialize™: Coaching Parents of Children with Autism and Social Communication Difficulties

Working with young children who have autism or social communication difficulties presents many challenges. While research continues to show that parent-implemented intervention is a highly effective approach to helping these children, many professionals are not sure how best to involve parents.

For almost 20 years, we’ve trained speech-language pathologists through our More Than Words® workshop to provide effective parent-implemented intervention to families of children with autism. Now, we’re thrilled to expand our reach by offering a new workshop to non-SLP professionals who work with young children on the autism spectrum (or with social communication difficulties) and their families. As these professionals play critical roles in supporting children’s communication, we want to provide them with the highest-quality tools to make a difference for families.

The Hanen 4 “I”s to Socialize workshop was designed to provide professionals with the tools to empower parents to create the kind of interactions that lay the foundations for communication and language. The workshop covers evidence-based responsive interaction strategies drawn from Hanen’s More Than Words® program and guidebook. The training provides a framework on how to coach parents and caregivers to apply these strategies during everyday interactions with their child. This coaching model is based on the most current literature on effective coaching and is provided in a simple four-step framework. Each step of the model is illustrated with videos of a clinician and parent of a young child with autism during a coaching session.

Participants also receive a comprehensive set of resources that include everything needed to effectively integrate the Hanen approach into everyday clinical work.
