Learning Language and Loving It™ Certification Workshop

 

Q: Who can take the Learning Language and Loving It workshop?

A: This workshop is for qualified speech-language pathologists/therapists and early childhood education professionals who train, coach or consult to other educators. Registrants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

  • SLPs: Masters Degree (from US/Canada) or Bachelors Degree (from UK/Australia/New Zealand) or other international equivalent, in Speech-Language Pathology.
  • Educators: Diploma or degree in early childhood education or education, as well as experience with consulting, training or mentoring other educators.

Q: Can speech-language pathology or early childhood education students take the workshop?

A: Students are not permitted to take this workshop.

 

Q: Are there any prerequisites for the Learning Language and Loving It workshop?

A: Apart from the eligibility requirements noted above, there are no prerequisites for this workshop.

 

Q: Is there anything I need to do before I come to the workshop?

A: Yes. Prior to the start of the workshop, participants must:

  • Complete a Pre-workshop Assignment – A link will be sent to you after registration.  This assignment must be completed at least five days before the start date of the workshop. If it is not completed, you will not be permitted to attend the workshop. Any refunds will be subject to the cancellation policy of the host organization – up to and including forfeiture of your registration fee.
  • Obtain a copy of the Learning Language and Loving It guidebook – This guidebook is required to attend the workshop, and it is the participants' responsibility to obtain a copy before the start date.

Q: What is the workshop format and agenda?

A: Learning Language and Loving It is a 3-day workshop consisting of approximately 7 hours of training per day (including scheduled breaks). In an online setting, SLPs participate in experiential, hands-on activities as the instructor guides them through the process of teaching adults in the context of a Learning Language and Loving It Program, as well as in the context of one-to-one consultations with educators. In a supportive environment, participants have the opportunity to practice each component of the teaching process and to self-evaluate, as well as receive constructive feedback from the instructor.

Q: What are the technical requirements to attend an online workshop?

A: You will need:

  • a computer — one of: laptop/desktop/tablet. (You may not attend on a smartphone, and each participant must have their own individual device to participate)
  • the Zoom application installed onto your device
  • reliable internet connection (wired if possible)
  • webcam/microphone/speakers
  • two screens are recommended — one to attend the online class and the other for session handouts. You also have the option to print out handouts.

Q: What are the workshop fees?

A: Fees vary from workshop to workshop. Please visit the individual workshop registration pages for Early Bird and regular fees.


Q: What are the workshop materials?

Once certified, you will gain access to the following digital materials:

  • Learning Language and Loving It Making Hanen Happen Leaders Guide – This manualized guide includes information on Hanen’s teaching methodology, and provides a detailed guide to leading the program, session by session. It includes all the handouts and checklists required to lead the program.
  • Learning Language and Loving It PowerPoint slides with embedded video clips  – These downloadable resources include the presentation slides for all sessions of the program, and includes real-life video examples of educators using Learning Language and Loving It strategies.

Q: Do I become certified after attending this workshop?

A: Yes. Participants receive accreditation of their “Certified” status upon signing a Cooperative Agreement (this agreement licenses SLPs and early childhood education consultants/trainer to lead Learning Language and Loving It™ — The Hanen Program® for Early Childhood Educators). Participants also receive a one-year renewable Hanen membership upon completion of the workshop. To maintain certification and have full access to member benefits, Hanen membership must be renewed annually for a nominal fee.

Note: Full attendance at all days of the workshop is required in order to receive your certification.

 

Q: How many continuing education credits will I receive?

A:  This workshop is offered for 2.15 ASHA CEUs (Advanced Level, Professional Area) or 21.5 professional development hours.


 

Q: Once I’ve completed Learning Language and Loving It, which other Hanen workshops will I be eligible to take?

A: Learning Language and Loving It is the prerequisite workshop for the ABC and Beyond™ Advanced Hanen Workshop and also qualifies you to take the I'm Ready!™workshop. You will be eligible to take these workshops as long as your Hanen membership is current. 


Q: What are the workshop instructor’s qualifications?

A: All Hanen workshops are led by a Hanen Instructor who has successfully completed in-depth training from The Hanen Centre. In addition to leading Hanen Workshops for The Hanen Centre, all Hanen Instructors are practising SLPs who lead Hanen Programs as part of the clinical services they offer in their respective places of employment.
 

Q: I may not have the opportunity to offer the Learning Language and Loving It Program to groups of educators. Will the workshop still be useful to me?

A: Yes. The workshop covers the application of the Hanen approach in a variety of settings, including one-to-one consultations with educators. Workshop materials can be easily integrated into in one-to-one contexts.

  • Arrange for a Teacher Talk™ presentation Teacher Talk is a flexible series of three 1-day trainings for educators that cover the key principles of the Learning Language and Loving It Program.
