Course Overview

When setting vocabulary goals for children who are late talkers, clinicians must consider a variety of factors.

Choosing Initial Vocabulary Targets  highlights key criteria for vocabulary selection (the child’s understanding of the word, his speech sound repertoire, his motivation and his existing word types) and then goes on to discuss the rationale and importance of pairing each target word with a gesture. Using a case study, participants are given the opportunity to practice choosing vocabulary according to the specified criteria.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this 2 hour e-seminar, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the characteristics of children who are considered late talkers
  • List the criteria for selecting vocabulary targets and explain the rationale for each one
  • Discuss the importance of including verbs as initial target vocabulary
  • Explain the significance of pairing vocabulary targets with gestures
  • Select individualized vocabulary targets for children who are late talkers
