Bring Hanen to your School

As academics in the field of speech-language pathology, you are likely always on the lookout for programs and materials that are evidence-based.   The Hanen Centre is offering a FREE presentation that will include very practical information that prepare students to work with parents of young children who are language delayed.

This offer reflects the mandate of The Hanen Centre, which is to educate speech-language pathologists, professionals and the public-at-large about early language intervention through the involvement of the child’s caregivers. Our primary focus is speech-language pathologists since our train-the-trainer workshops are designed to equip SLPs to work with families of children with language delays.

Over the course of 2007-2008, we will be offering a limited number of on-site presentations to students and faculty at no charge.

This 2.5 hour interactive presentation includes very practical information that students tell us is of great help to them in their clinical work, including:

  • Introduction to the evidence-based Hanen approach to early language intervention- and its relation to IDEA regulations and "best practice"
  • Introduction to teaching parents – using adult education principles to facilitate parents’ application of responsive strategies to interactions with their child
  • Demonstration of how responsive strategies are taught to parents
  • Information on the use of coaching and videotaping with feedback to facilitate parents’ consistent application of responsive strategies
  • Summary of efficacy studies on It Takes Two to Talk®

How Hanen Resources have been used in College/University Speech and Language Programs

Professors and Instructors have integrated Hanen resources into SLP training programs in a variety of ways, including:

  • Using the guidebook It Takes Two to Talk®- A Practical Guide for Parents of Children with Language Delays (Pepper & Weitzman, 2004)
  • Using the It Takes Two to Talk® DVD: A Guide to Building Communication Development in Children with Language Delays.  As a companion to the Guidebook, this DVD brings the guidebook to life with real life examples of parents applying the strategies in everyday situations.

If you are considering using Hanen resources with your students and would like to receive a complementary preview copy of any of our resources or our research summaries, please click here.

How Hanen Programs have been used in college/university Speech and Language programs

Hanen Programs can be delivered to students by Hanen certified SLPs in the community who are either contracted by the college/university or are able to providing student training as part of their service delivery mandate.

There are a variety of flexible options for the delivery of the Hanen approach to students:

  • A selected number of students with a particular interest in language development, communication disorders and emerging literacy participate in the program as an optional elective
  • Instructors provide the program throughout an academic year by incorporating group sessions into exiting courses, such as courses on language development, special needs, emerging literacy.
  • Videotaping and feedback sessions, which are part of Hanen Programs, are coordinated with practicum experiences

New SLP Graduate Subsidy

Hanen workshops prepare SLPs to work effectively with families. In response to many requests, we have created a special bursary program to make it easier for newly-graduated SLPs in North America to access the It Takes Two to Talk Certification Workshop. This involves providing partial subsidies to a limited number of SLPs within two years of graduation.  For more information, click here.
