Children with Langauge Delay

When You Suspect a Child is Language-delayed

Parents and caregivers need to know what they can do to help their child when a language delay is suspected or diagnosed.  We recommend referring to the Developmental Milestones checklist in order to decide whether or not to refer a child for speech and language services.

The following are red flags for language delay that should never be ignored:

  • not pointing or using gestures by 12 months
  • not babbling by 12 to 15 months
  • not understanding simple commands by 18 months
  • not using words by 18 months
  • not using short phrases by two years
  • not using sentences by three years
  • not being able to tell a simple story by four or five years

Part of supporting parents of children with suspected or identified language delays involves sharing information so they understand that they are their child’s best teachers – and that they can help their child by using language-promoting strategies and techniques whenever they are with their child.
