About the You Make the Difference_® Workshop

This three day Hanen Licensing Workshop provides intensive, small-group training to family support professionals and speech-language pathologists who provide General Education/Prevention services to communities. The workshop addresses the integration of the latest literature in the field of child development and the Hanen approach, which empowers parents to facilitate their child’s language skills in everyday contexts.

Each You Make the Difference workshop addresses the issues of teaching program content to groups of parents with varying needs and backgrounds. The workshops are also tailored to help Family Support Professionals recognize and meet the particular needs of the population being served.

Workshop Objectives

This is a program for groups of parents of typically developing children and children at risk who could benefit from learning how to interact with their children in ways that promote the parent-child relationship and foster social, language and literacy development. After attending the intensive, small-group workshop, participants will be able to:

• Apply the principles of adult learning to provide an effective group learning experience for parents
• Apply a conceptual framework to evaluating and facilitating parent and child interactions
• Apply the principles of supportive coaching to help parents successfully foster and enrich their child’s learning
• Use a strength-based approach to support parent’s learning and skill development
• Demonstrate an increased awareness of social and language development concerns
• Lead a You Make The Difference Parent-Child Communication Program

Workshop Format

Throughout the workshop, participants take part in experiential, hands-on activities as the Instructor guides them through the process of leading a You Make The Difference Parent-Child Program. Principles of adult learning and family-centered practice are incorporated throughout. IMPORTANT: Full attendance and participation in all three days of the workshop is mandatory.

Who Can Attend?

To be eligible to enroll in the You Make The Difference Workshop, participants must have:

• post-secondary training in early childhood education, public health/community nursing, social work, speech-language pathology or a related field and/or
• a minimum of two years experience working with parents and their young children

It may be helpful to attend the workshop with a colleague, so you will have someone who can co-lead the You Make The Difference Program with you.

Upon Completion of the workshop

Participants are certified to run You Make The Difference Parent-Child Communication Program according to specified guidelines and to use the Hanen name and logo when running this program.

Accommodations

Workshop participants are responsible for researching and arranging their own travel and accommodations.

About the Hanen Workshop Instructor

The You Make The Difference Workshop is led by a Hanen Instructor who has successfully completed rigorous training from The Hanen Centre on how to train other professionals to run this Hanen Program. In addition to leading Hanen Workshops for The Hanen Centre, all Hanen You Make The Difference Instructors are highly qualified and experience You Make The Difference Group Leaders who through the support of their community agency, provide this program to the families within their respective communities.
