Learning Language and Loving It™ Train-the-Trainer Workshop

Goal

To train Program Leaders for the Learning Language and Loving It Program or Teacher Talk™ Training Series

Participants

The Learning Language and Loving It workshop for early childhood education trainers and consultants is open to ECE Consultants, Literacy Specialists & Professors/Instructors who have completed the Learning Language and Loving It Program or can demonstrate a strong knowledge of the Learning Language and Loving It Program content.

Training

3-day workshop includes:

• review of program content
• application of principles of adult learning in group training
• effective use of videotaping and feedback sessions to support behaviour change
• training in the use of the Teacher Interaction and Language Rating Scale to evaluate the effectiveness of the program

Workshop Objectives

Workshop participants learn to:

• provide effective, state-of-the-art group training to educators through Learning Language and Loving It – The Hanen Program® for Early Childhood Educators/Teachers, which integrates the principles of language facilitation with a child centered approach to early childhood education
• provide educators with strategies to promote social and language development in one-to-one and group interactions with children who are typically developing, are second language learners  or have language delays or are at-risk
• help educators create enriched, interactive language learning environments in play and daily routines
• address the educator’s role in fostering peer interaction, pretend play and the development of literacy skills
• use the Teacher Interaction and Language Rating Scale to evaluate teacher-child interaction– an important training outcome measure

Workshop Format

Throughout the workshop, participants are involved in experiential, hands-on activities as the Instructor guides them through the process of leading a Learning Language and Loving It Program. IMPORTANT: Full attendance and participation in all three days of the workshop is mandatory.

Prerequisites

Early childhood educators who have completed the 14-week Learning Language and Loving It Program are eligible to become licensed Learning Language and Loving It Program Leaders.

The Train-The-Trainer process consists of three phases:

Phase 1	Participation in a 14-week Learning Language and Loving It Program in the candidate’s own community within the past five years. Note: If more than five years have elapsed since the candidate participated in a Learning Language and Loving It Program or if the candidate or is unable to access a local Learning Language and Loving It Program but is able to demonstrate a strong understanding of the  content, completion of alternate Phase 1 activities may be possible.
Phase 2	Participation in a three day Train-the-Trainer workshop offered by The Hanen Centre either in Toronto or in other communities.
Phase 3	Initiation of an inaugural 14-week Learning Language and Loving It Program for early childhood educators and other appropriate child care staff and/or students in the participant’s organization or community as soon as possible upon completion of the three day Train-the-Trainer Workshop. Trainers are mentored by an experienced Learning Language and Loving It Program Leader during their first program.

Upon Completion of the Workshop

Participants are certified to run Learning Language and Loving It – The Hanen Program for Early Childhood Educators/Teachers according to specified guidelines and to use the Hanen name and logo when running these programs.

Once a Program Leader has completed Phase 3 of the Train-The-Trainer process, she also has the option of providing the Teacher Talk Training Series - 3 one-day training sessions, whose content is adapted from the Learning Language and Loving It Program.  For more information on Teacher Talk, click here or email teachertalk@hanen.org.

• Making Hanen Happen, the Learning Language and Loving It Program’s Leader’s Guide. This guide provides in-depth, practical information on adult education principles and their application to the Learning Language and Loving It Program, as well as detailed session-by-session agendas.

Accommodations

Workshop participants are responsible for researching and arranging their own travel and accommodations.

About the Hanen Workshop Instructor

All Hanen Workshops are led by a Hanen Instructor who has successfully completed rigorous training from The Hanen Centre on how to train others to run Hanen Programs. In addition to leading Hanen Workshops for The Hanen Centre, all Hanen Instructors are SLPs who practice in a variety of settings, and lead Hanen Programs as part of the clinical services they offer in their respective places of employment.
