About the It Takes Two to Talk® Workshop
In this experiential three-day Hanen Certification Workshop, speech-language pathologists/therapists learn about the Hanen approach to early language intervention, which empowers parents of children with language delays to become their child’s primary language facilitator. They also receive training in how to lead the It Takes Two to Talk Program, in which parents learn to apply responsive strategies to everyday interactions with their child, making intervention an ongoing process.
The It Takes Two to Talk workshop:
- Is Hanen’s initial, foundational workshop and is for speech-language pathologists/therapists (SLP/Ts) only
If you are not a speech-language pathologist/therapist, click here.
- Provides intensive, small-group training to SLP/Ts who work with preschoolers (0-5) with language delays and their families
- Addresses application of the Hanen approach within everyday clinical practice, as well as within an It Takes Two to Talk Program
- Covers adult learning principles and their application to teaching parents/caregivers, using the Hanen teaching model
- Is a prerequisite for attendance at advanced Hanen workshops
Workshop Objectives
Upon completion of the It Takes Two to Talk workshop, SLP/Ts will be able to:
- Explain the rationale for the mediator model of early language intervention (i.e. training parents, teachers and other caregivers to become the child’s language facilitator)
- Lead an It Takes Two To Talk Program
- Utilize principles of adult education to provide parents with the training, information and support they need to become their child’s primary language facilitator
- Plan and lead interactive, learner-centred group sessions for parents
- Provide coaching and effective feedback during one-to-one video feedback consultations
- Apply Hanen strategies and principles in general clinical practice
Workshop Format
Throughout the workshop, speech language pathologists participate in experiential, hands-on activities as the Instructor guides them through the content and process of leading an It Takes Two to Talk Program. Discussions about how to incorporate the It Takes Two to Talk principles into the context of daily practice are incorporated throughout. Principles of adult learning and family-centered practice are discussed as an integral part of the program and approach to parent training. IMPORTANT: Full attendance and participation in all three days of the workshop is mandatory.
