Additional Information
I have over 20 years of experience in the field of speech-language pathology, including working in a wide variety of settings (college clinical instructor, speech language pathologist in: a rehabilitation hospital, outpatient clinic, elementary school, early intervention program, home health service and private practice). Prior to discovering my passion for speech pathology I was a reporter for a daily newspaper in California. Speech language pathology is so much more rewarding! I can collect, analyze, synthesize and write about information and I am able to help families as well. This truly is the best of both worlds for me.
My private practice is a Telehealth clinic (Lynn Gauman Speech Pathology Services in South Kingstown, RI), addressing communication and feeding disorders affecting children, from birth to young adults.
I have specialty training in swallowing and feeding disorders (dysphagia),
including facilitating modified barium swallow studies in a hospital setting and training in Food Chaining and Talk Tools protocols.
For children with deficits in motor planning for speech (i.e. Childhood Apraxia of Speech, Dysarthria) I am trained in PROMPT Therapy (Level II) (Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets) and Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (Edythe Strand).
I am experienced at working with children who are diagnosed with autism, providing services individually and in social communication groups. I have specialty training as a Hanen TM "Learning Language and Loving It," "Teacher Talk," "It Takes Two to Talk," "More Than Words" and "Talkability" certified instructor and in the SCERTS Model (Social Communication, Emotional Regulation, Transactional Support) (Prizant et al).
I am trained in "Adventures in Voice," sonorant voice therapy for childhood voice disorders and have experience treating voice disorders in a medical setting.
Parents and caregivers are active participants in every therapy session at my practice. They are my partners in this venture of changing their child's communication or feeding behaviors and skills. With caregivers' support therapy continues all week long, as I've observed in early intervention and with the Hanen Program. When parents (who are the specialists when it comes to knowing their own child) link up with a therapist (specially trained in therapy techniques and treatment modalities), that union is a powerful force for change.
