Workshops for Speech-Language Pathologists: Working with Parents
It Takes Two to Talk® Certification Workshop
It Takes Two to Talk® is Hanen’s foundational workshop for SLPs who work with families of young children with language delays. SLPs take this workshop to gain the knowledge and tools that are essential for effectively involving parents in the intervention process in order to help them achieve the best possible language outcomes for their child.
Recognizing that parents are adult learners with specific needs, goals, life experiences and knowledge, The Hanen Centre developed an effective teaching methodology that accommodates all learning styles and ensures that parents are actively engaged in the learning, thereby maximizing their ability to both understand and apply their learning effectively to everyday interactions with their child.
The It Takes Two to Talk workshop equips you with this evidence-based methodology, and shows you how you can apply it to a variety of clinical contexts such as individual therapy and group training.
A one-year, renewable Hanen membership is included in the cost of the workshop.
Workshop prerequisite: Masters Degree (from US/Canada) or Bachelors Degree (from UK/Australia/New Zealand) or other international equivalent, in Speech-Language Pathology

Stream 1 Advanced Workshops
Once trained in It Takes Two to Talk, you’ll have the knowledge and skills necessary to attend Advanced Hanen Workshops which address the specific communication needs of the particular populations of young children you may work with. These workshops include:
Target Word® Advanced Workshop
If you work with parents of very young children ages 18-30 months who are Late Talkers (i.e. children with relatively good comprehension, social and play skills, but who do not use as many words or word combinations as other children their age), the Target Word® workshop can help you address the specific needs of this clinical subgroup of children. The workshop certifies you to offer the Target Word Program for Parents of Children who are Late Talkers and shows you how best to help parents facilitate their child’s expressive vocabulary development.

TalkAbility™ Advanced Workshop
Building on More Than Words, The Hanen Centre developed an approach specifically for parents of children with high-functioning autism, including Asperger Syndrome, and other social communication difficulties. TalkAbility™ addresses the unique challenges these children face, such as “tuning in” to the thoughts and feelings of others and developing a Theory of Mind.
Available to SLPs who have taken the More than Words workshop, the TalkAbility Advanced Workshop certifies you to lead the TalkAbility Program for Parents of Verbal Children on the Autism Spectrum, and it provides you with valuable knowledge and tools for empowering parents to help their child develop the important social communication skills all children need in order to have meaningful conversations and successful relationships.
