Learning Language and Loving It™ Certification Workshop


Q: Who can take the Learning Language and Loving It workshop?

A: This workshop is for qualified speech-language pathologists/therapists and early childhood education professionals who train, coach or consult to other educators. Registrants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

  • SLPs: Masters Degree (from US/Canada) or Bachelors Degree (from UK/Australia/New Zealand) or other international equivalent, in Speech-Language Pathology.
  • Educators: Diploma or degree in early childhood education or education, as well as experience with consulting, training or mentoring other educators.

Q: Can speech-language pathology or early childhood education students take the workshop?

A: No, students are not permitted to take this workshop.

Q: Are there any prerequisites for the Learning Language and Loving It workshop?

A: Apart from the eligibility requirements noted above, there are no prerequisites for this workshop.

Q: What are the workshop objectives?

A: Upon completion of the Learning Language and Loving It Certification Workshop, SLP/Ts will be able to:

  • Provide effective, state-of-the-art group training to educators through Learning Language and Loving It – The Hanen Program® for Early Childhood Educators/Teachers, which integrates the principles of language facilitation with a child centered approached to early childhood education.
  • Lead Learning Language and Loving It – The Hanen Program® for Early Childhood Educators/Teachers, which addresses prevention of language delays, early language intervention and language enrichment in early childhood settings.
  • Provide educators with strategies to promote social, language and literacy development in one-to-one and group interactions with children who are typically developing, are second language learners, have language delays, or are at risk for language delay.
  • Help educators create enriched, interactive language-learning environments in play and daily routines.
  • Utilize principles of adult education to provide teachers with the necessary knowledge and skills to create optimal language learning environments for all children.
  • Plan and conduct interactive group sessions in the Learning Language and Loving It Program.
  • Assess videotaped teacher-child interactions in terms of teachers’ application of responsive strategies and provide constructive, informative feedback to teachers to facilitate generalization of strategy use.
  • Evaluate videotaped interactions in terms of application of responsive strategies using the Teacher Interaction and Language Rating Scale.

Q: What is the workshop format and agenda?

A: Learning Language and Loving It is a 3-day workshop consisting of approximately 7 hours of training per day (including scheduled breaks). In a small group setting, SLPs participate in experiential, hands-on activities as the instructor guides them through the process of teaching adults in the context of a Learning Language and Loving It Program, as well as in the context of one-to-one consultations with educators. In a supportive environment, participants have the opportunity to practice each component of the teaching process and to self-evaluate, as well as receive constructive feedback from the instructor.

Q: What are the workshop fees and materials?

A: Fees vary from workshop to workshop, depending on location, venue and administrative costs. Visit the individual workshop registration pages for Early Bird and regular fees. Included in your workshop fee is the following full set of Learning Language and Loving It resources:

  • Learning Language and Loving It Making Hanen Happen Leaders Guide – This manualized guide includes information on Hanen’s teaching methodology, and provides a detailed guide to leading the program, session by session. It includes all the handouts and checklists required to lead the program.
  • Learning Language and Loving It PowerPoint slides DVD with embedded video clips and DVD User’s Guide – This DVD contains the presentation slides for all sessions of the program, and includes real-life video examples of educators using Learning Language and Loving It strategies.
  • Learning Language and Loving It Guidebook (Weitzman & Greenberg, 2002) – An easy-to-read guide used alongside the program, as well as in individual consultations, to help educators effectively build the social, language and early literacy skills of preschool children.
  • Teacher Interaction and Language Rating Scale – A useful video observation rating tool to evaluate educators’ use of Learning Language and Loving It strategies before and after the program.
  • An Introduction to Hanen DVD – This DVD is used by the SLP or ECE Consultant/Trainer to provide a brief introduction to the Hanen approach.

Q: Do I become certified after attending this workshop?

A: Yes. Participants receive accreditation of their “Certified” status upon signing a Cooperative Agreement (this agreement licenses SLPs and early childhood education consultants/trainer to lead Learning Language and Loving It™ — The Hanen Program® for Early Childhood Educators). Participants also receive a one-year renewable Hanen membership upon completion of the workshop. To maintain certification and have full access to member benefits, Hanen membership must be renewed annually for a nominal fee.

Note: Full attendance at all days of the workshop is required in order to receive your certification.

Q: Is there anything I need to do before I come to the workshop?

A: Yes. In order to attend the workshop, all registrants must complete a Pre-workshop Assignment. A link to the assignment will be sent to you after registration. This assignment covers important content that is needed in order to participate in the workshop and receive your certification. For this reason, its completion is mandatory.

Note: The Pre-Workshop Assignment must be completed at least five days before the start date of the workshop. If it is not completed, you will not be permitted to attend the workshop. Any refunds will be subject to the cancellation policy of the host organization – up to and including forfeiture of your  registration fee.

Q: Once I’ve completed Learning Language and Loving It, which other Hanen workshops will I be eligible to take?

A: Learning Language and Loving It is a prerequisite workshop for the ABC and Beyond™ Advanced Hanen Workshop. You will be eligible to take this workshop as long as your Hanen membership is current. Please note that Learning Language and Loving It is not a prerequisite workshop for the It Takes Two to Talk® or More Than Words® certification workshops.

Q: How many continuing education credits will I receive?

A: This workshop is offered for 2.6 ASHA CEUs (Introductory Level, Professional Area). Full attendance and participation during the three days is required. This workshop focuses specifically on the Learning Language and Loving It™ Program and accompanying resources and will include no or limited information on other similar or related products or services.

If you are attending an International workshop and wish to receive ASHA CEUs, please email at least 6 weeks prior to the workshop date.

Q: What are the workshop instructor’s qualifications?

A: All Hanen workshops are led by a Hanen Instructor who has successfully completed in-depth training from The Hanen Centre. In addition to leading Hanen Workshops for The Hanen Centre, all Hanen Instructors are practising SLPs who lead Hanen Programs as part of the clinical services they offer in their respective places of employment.

Q: I may not have the opportunity to offer the Learning Language and Loving It Program to groups of educators. Will the workshop still be useful to me?

A: Yes. The workshop covers the application of the Hanen approach in a variety of settings, including one-to-one consultations with educators. Workshop materials can be easily integrated into in one-to-one contexts.

Q: How can I find a Learning Language and Loving It workshop?

A: Visit the workshop schedule. If there are no workshops currently scheduled in your area, sign up for email notification so you’ll be informed as soon as a workshop becomes available.

Q: Am I responsible for my own accommodations?

A: Yes, workshop participants must research and arrange their own travel and accommodations.

Q: I am not an SLP or early childhood education consult/trainer, but I am interested in Hanen strategies for myself or my organization. What can I do?

  • Arrange for a Teacher Talk™ presentation – Teacher Talk is a flexible series of three 1-day trainings for educators that cover key principles from the Learning Language and Loving It Program.
