Course Overview

This e-Seminar introduces typical development of social communication in infants and toddlers and describes how to use the following milestones to identify a child at risk for ASD:

  • social interaction
  • attention
  • communication
  • play skills
  • responsiveness

Based on these primary areas of difficulty, participants gain practical guidance for developing appropriate social and communication goals for these children.


Course Objectives

Upon completion of this 2 hour e-seminar, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the implications of early identification of autism spectrum disorder for the provision of early language intervention to this group of children and their families.
  • Describe typical early social communication development in toddlers
  • Identify early red flags which place children at risk for autism spectrum disorder
  • Select appropriate intervention goals for toddlers with autism spectrum disorder
  • Describe specific interaction strategies from the More Than Words® Program that can be taught to parents in order to facilitate their child’s achievement of intervention goals

 

Professional Development Hours

  • This course is offered for 0.2 ASHA CEUs (introductory level; Professional area). Full attendance and participation during the two hours is required. This course focuses on aspects of the Hanen approach to early language intervention and will include no or limited information on other similar or related products or services.

Presenter Info



Ian Roth
, M.H.Sc., Reg. CASLPO, S-LP(C), is a speech-language pathologist who works primarily with preschoolers with autism and their families. He also works in the Tourette Syndrome Neurodevelopmental Clinic with children and adolescents with Tourette syndrome and co-morbid Asperger’s syndrome. Ian has worked with individuals with autism spectrum disorders for longer than he has been a speech pathologist. Ian was first trained in It Takes Two to Talk® in 2000 and then in More Than Words® in 2002. He has been teaching More Than Words® to families – both in parent programs and individually – ever since.
