Course Overview

Make Words Sparkle focuses on making vocabulary instruction a natural part of shared book reading and everyday conversations in early childhood settings.

This 2-hour e-Seminar offers research-based strategies that foster vocabulary learning in children who have a basic vocabulary and speak in sentences. With the help of videotaped, real-life examples, participants learn how to:

• select target words
• highlight new words and convey the meaning of new words through visual cues
• provide children with opportunities to use and hear new words in a variety of everyday contexts

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this 2 hour e-seminar, participants will be able to:

• Describe the connection between vocabulary knowledge and literacy
• Select the “right” books to foster vocabulary learning during book reading
• “Step up” the level of vocabulary with the introduction of less familiar and less frequently occurring sophisticated or precise words that are connected to literacy success
• Apply the vocabulary-building strategy “Shoot for the SSTaRS” in book reading as well as in meaningful conversations during everyday classroom activities, as well as during speech therapy sessions
• Share strategies for building vocabulary with parents and early childhood educators

Professional Development Hours

• This course is offered for 0.2 ASHA CEUs (introductory level; Professional area). Full attendance and participation during the two hours is required. This course focuses on aspects of the Hanen approach to the facilitation of early language and literacy development and will include no or limited information on other similar or related products or services.

Presenter Info

Financial: Tamara Stein, M.Sc.(A)–SLP(C) is a Speech-Language Pathologist who has worked with young children and their families since 2009. In her work at The Hanen Centre, Tamara contributed to the development of a variety of programs and resources. She now leads It Takes Two to Talk® and SPARK Communication™ workshops. She also uses Hanen resources in her clinical work with families and offers It Takes Two to Talk®, More Than Words®, I’m Ready™, TalkAbility™ and ABC and Beyond™ programs to parents and educators.
