Course Overview

Working with children on the autism spectrum or with social communication difficulties presents new challenges. While research shows that parent-implemented intervention is a highly effective approach to these children, many professionals aren’t sure where to start.

Building Communication: Supporting Parents of Preschoolers with Autism Spectrum Disorder or Social Communication Difficulties is the perfect starting point for professionals new to working with children with autism, or for professionals with more experience looking for a new approach. This presentation covers the basic content of More Than Words® – The Hanen Program® for Parents of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, including:

  • the four stages of communication, and goals associated with each of these stages
  • core interaction strategies to share with parents and caregivers
  • the importance of engaging parents and caregivers in collaborative discussions about their children

This presentation features five hours of content, separated into three videos to let you focus on the areas most beneficial for your work. It also includes access to several parent handouts to support you as you begin to implement these strategies in your work with children on the spectrum.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this 5-hour presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of including parents and caregivers in early intervention with children with autism or social communication difficulties.
